What We All Admire About Beyonce’

I know it’s absolutely ridiculous but I can’t help but to continue to compare myself to Beyonce’. Maybe it’s because we were both born in 1981, have artistic careers and are having our first child at 30. We’re both married and have an obvious passion for amazing shoes. Of course that’s where most of the similarities end but for some reason I feel there’s something deeper in her we all connect to and strive for.

At a young age she made a choice about what she wanted to be and stuck to it with laser focus. She has perfectly and strategically planned her life with grace and seemingly without misstep. She’s an Outlier in every sense of the word with way beyond 10,000 hours of practice. She is the very definition of diva pop star entertainer.

She delivered on all her promises to Jay in Upgrade U and has a baby who looks so gorgeous you want to believe she’s been photoshopped.

The more she tries to appeal to her fans as human and relatable the more inadequate and alienated we feel. Her super “revealing” tumblr debut proved once again that she looked perfect pregnant in her two piece on vacay, even without make-up she still looks better than you in the morning, her mogul husband loves her very much, and she’s even better than you in Connect 4!

She has no vices, no addictions, no record of DUIs, and has avoided bad relationships with multiple breakups, proposals or baby daddys and no failed marriages.

She can even cry perfectly on cue when she performs Flaws and All.

But despite all that I think what frustrates and intimates us the most about her is that she figured out what she wanted to do with her life, tackled it like a bear and hasn’t let anything get in her way from achieving it. She is one of the most hard working and determined people in the world.

I also have to remind myself that I don’t have a team of hair, make-up, security etc, etc, at my disposal clearing out all obstacles in my life so I can achieve my goals.

I’ve gotta do my own hair, ride the subway, make my own breakfast, do the work I’ve gotta do to support myself financially so I can pursue my passion to the fullest.

I don’t get whisked away to the Amalfi Coast when I’m having a bad day. Christian Louboutin doesn’t sent me shoes from his new collection just to say hello.
I don’t get to go on shopping sprees at Topshop and my husband and I live in a studio apartment in the Bronx.

However, what I admire the most about Beyonce and that I have to remind myself is that I have to continue to push myself to be MY personal best and I want to hone and practice my craft with all the passion and intensity that we see in B. We admire her so much because she is living her personal dream and we all want to see our own dreams come into fruition.
I do believe I can do that by continuing to follow God’s plan for my life:

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. (John 10:10 NIV)
I’m gonna stay focused.
